Tell us something about yourself.
I am Kamal Raj, Founder and Creative Head of Soucika, a Bangalore based Women’s Wear Designer LabelQuestion 2
Tell us a little about your background
I am based out of Kerala. I did my entire schooling in Kerala and my graduation in B.Sc Fashion Designing from Mangalore University.Question 3
Tell us about your entry into the Fashion industry?
After 8 years of experience as an Assistant Designer with many International Designers I decided to launch my label Soucika in the year 2013, at Indira Nagar, Bangalore. Now we have one more store in Bangalore at Koramangala and one in Sharjah. I am launching Soucika at Kochi this month and very soon launching in Hyderabad and Coimbatore. We have also successfully launched our clothing line in many renowned online multi designer stores.
Share some Professional achievement or milesone’s in your career?
According to me, having managed to attain such fast progress in a very short span of time is quite a big achievement. In 2 years we have expanded in Bangalore, Kerala and very soon in Hyderabad and Coimbatore. Soucika is now recognised as one of the best fashion bespoke service in Bangalore and when I get good feedback from customers, I realise that I’ve been able to cater my customers in such an appreciable manner. Such recognisation is what I feel is a great achievement in my journey with Soucika.
The Challenges you have to face after you started your journey of becoming a designer?
When I first landed in India to start my own Label, 3 years back, the first thing I realized was that one will never be able to get recognition in the industry without a god-father or at least an affluent ancestry! In India, we have numerous talented designers and to fit into the market among them will take massive time and investment. Eventually, its only our customer who is going to appreciate and spread the news of our good work and also recommend us, for which it again takes huge time to build that sort of trust in them. In my journey of fashion, two things which has been really puzzling is the split approach by the fashion industry towards south and north Indian designers, and the kind of baffling criteria based on which any membership applications for any fashion councils gets approved.
What does Fashion means to you?
Fashion is unpredictable, it is fresh each day! Every single day is exciting for me as fashion is changing in a rapid pace like never before and honestly its quiet challenging to keep up with the pace!
What’s your Signature Style?
I love merging colors from various palettes to give a distinct and pleasing color combo in a single attire. I show excessive attention to detailing in my garments where I combine Indian embroidery style with western technique. A unique silhouette in an unusual color combo with an elaborate detailing is simply my style!
Tell us about your brand or label and the meaning of it?
People in Bangalore are from various walks of life, who have various demands, in terms of price, when it comes to clothing. Soucika is all about providing impeccable bespoke fashion service to Bangaloreans and the whole of South Indians, sooner or later globally!
My label ‘Soucika’ is a Sanskrit word named after my wife Lakshmi’s suggestion – which means ‘The man who lives by his needle’.
Tell us about your current collection and the reason behind the collection name?
My collection Alice in Desi-land is inspired from Lewis Caroll’s novel Alice in Wonderland. My collection is about a little girl Alice, lost in the dream of wide range of colors and flora she notices in India. The collection has 27 outfits, which includes 13 lehengas, 6 sarees and 8 ethnic jackets. Every single outfit shows my true obsession with colours and nature. I have used fabric like raw silk, brocade, georgette and crepe with immense attention to the detailing and embellishments. The outfits are made with neat and gentle silhouettes having applique work which has a combination of Indian and western style. This time my collection is very much practically wearable rather than high fashion garments.
Share your experience of showcasing your collection’s on BFW.
Just one word: FANTASTIC. I get a lot of good responses every time I showcase in BFW. But this time was truly exceptional; I got humongous response and this time Bangalore Fashion Week 15th Edition has definitely taken me to a whole different level.
Tell us about favourite designer’s out of the current one’s who had participated in current edition of BFW?
Purvi Doshi. I always admire her designs which are subtle with unique silhouettes. Her designs bring out the elegance in women.
I find inspiration from anything and everything around me which seems to be peculiar!
Any Message for the budding designers?
I’d advice the aspiring designers to constantly observe trends, never compromise on work and also value whatever they do. One should all the time respect the people around them and also spread the knowledge. The strategy to reach any heights in any field is always being ‘yourself’ and learning to say ‘NO’, sometimes.
Tell us about your future plans?
Right now I have opened my fourth store at Kochi, Panampillynagar . Later, in next 3 to 4 months I’ll be opening up in Hyderabad and Coimbatore. I also have plans of expanding all over India in the very near future. Apart from this, I have a major prospect upcoming which is called “Design your dress”. It’s an online virtual dress designing application which enables user to design and buy their occasion wear completely online.
Share your Success Mantra with us?
Step out of your comfort zone and push your limits to work hard! That’s when one will get what he wants.
The Changes you would want to bring about in the fashion Industry?
In my journey of fashion, two things which has been really puzzling is the split approach by the fashion industry towards south and north Indian designers, and the kind of baffling criteria based on which any membership applications for any fashion councils gets approved. This kind of approach has got to change and only then many good talented designers will come into the light.
Tell us about your Support System?
I have a very talented team who never fail to surprise me with their hard work and dedication.
