Mushroom Bati Basa

Mushroom can be prepared in a simple manner by cooking mushrooms, any masala ( mustard/ poppy seeds or both mushroom and poppy seeds), raw oil and spices in a deep bottomed cooking pan. This form of dish is known as ‘Bati Basa’ ( Bati means Bowl and Basa literally means placed). So cook this simple yet most flavorful preparation of mushroom with or without potato by following the below mentioned recipe.

Recipe of Mushroom Bati Basa/ Chatu Besara/ Chatu Rai

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Cooking Time: 10 to 15 minutes


Mushrooms – 250 gm Cut in small cube shape after cleaning the mushrooms with salt and turmeric water ( Desi Mushroom/ Pala Chatu/ Kuta Chatu tastes best but one can use button mushroom or experiment with other variety of mushrooms. Here I have used baby desi mushrooms)

Potato – 1 small ( peel the skin and cut in  small cube shape)

Onion – 1 small ( Peel the skin and cut in small square shapes)

Tomato – 1 medium ( chop in big square shape)

Green Chilli – 2 ( cut in small pieces)

Black Mustard Seeds – 1 tbsp ( You can use the yellow mustard seeds too)

Garlic Cloves – 5 to 6

Salt to taste

Turmeric powder – 1 tsp

Chilli Powder – 1 tsp

Mustard Oil – 3 tbsp

Method :

Grind the mustard seeds and garlic using a sil Bata or grinder. Add a half tsp of water in between grinding to get a smooth mustard paste. Strain the paste and remove the residue ungrinded outer black flakes of mustard

Take a deep bottomed small sized pan/ Kadhai/ cooking vessel made of silver or Iron. Add the chopped mushrooms, potatoes, tomatoes, mustard paste and the rest of the ingredients along with the raw mustard oil. Mix well. Keep Covered. Continue to cook in a low heat. Stir in between. Cook using medium to low heat. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes till you are left with well cooked mushrooms and potatoes. Switch off the flame and serve the dish with some steamed rice and dal.
