Rohu Fish Masala

How about cooking some mouthwatering Rohu Fish masala for a lazy sunday lunch?

Yes it’s easy and all the fish lovers will definitely going to love the dish.

The other name of Rohu is Carpo Fish, Rohu( in malayalam), Kannadi Kendai, Rohu(Tamil), Bocha Gnadu Meen(Telugu) and Tambada Massa (Hindi/marathi). You can use any other fish and follow this recipe.

Now let’s cook this tasty fish masala using Rohu fish.

Recipe of Rohu Fish masala

Rohu Fish – 700 gms(around 8-9 pieces cut into 2″ thick slices)

Black mustard seeds – 1 tbsp

Yellow mustard seeds – 1tbsp

Cumin seeds – 1 tbsp

Fish Masala – 1 tsp(from any company optional)

Garam Masala – 2 tsp

Coriander Powder – 2 tbsp

Turmeric powder – 1 and 1/2 tbsp

Red chilly powder – 1 tbsp

Salt – 2 and 1/2 tbsp

Onion – 1 big onion chopped into small pieces

Tomato – 1 big tomato chopped into small pieces

Green chilly – 2 sliced half

Garlic cloves – 8 pieces

Ginger – 1 tbsp of finely chopped ginger

Mustard Oil – 1 cup

Fresh Coriander leaves – chopped finely


Clean the fish pieces and remove all the water. Then add one tbsp turmeric powder, 1 and half tbsp salt, one tsp garam masala, 1 tsp fish masala, one tbsp coriander powder and half tbsp red chilly powder in the fish pieces. Mix well with hands and keep aside for 5 minutes.

Prepare a masala paste by first grinding the cumin, yellow and black mustard seeds together. Don’t use any water. Then add the onion,tomato,ginger,garlic and tomato into the grinder. Grind till you get a smooth wet masala paste.

Then take a deep bottomed pan and pour the mustard oil in it. Heat the oil till the oil starts smoking. Then deep fry the rohu pieces in small batches of 4 pieces at a time. The trick to get the crispy fried fish is to fry the fishes first using high heat then continue to fry in medium heat till one side is fried well and attain a golden colour.Then flip the fishes and fry the other side as well. Just flip once that’s it. Then remove the fried pieces from heat and keep aside.

Then keep 4 pieces of fried fish to be consumed immediately and get ready to prepare the Rohu masala with the remaining 4 fried pieces.

In the same pan heat up the residue oil  and add the previously prepared wet masala paste, one tbsp salt, half tbsp turmeric powder, half tbsp chilly powder, one tbsp coriander powder,one tsp garam masala,2 sliced green chilly and some water. Then continue to cook the masala till done and you can no longer smell the raw smell of masala. Then add 3 cups of water and boil well with the masala. Then add the fried fish pieces and covered the pan for 5 minutes in low heat. Then remove the pan from the heat. Then serve the Rohu fish masala with some chopped coriander leaves. Relish the curry with some steamed rice and enjoy the siesta afterwards.
